| Over the many years of my life I have received many gifts, but the most important ones have been those not of a material nature. Jim's friendship, our bond, the friendship with Doctor McCoy and the rest of the Enterprise crew with whom I served for many years chief among those treasured, precious gifts. I had little more than the robes on my back when I arrived on Romulus and living underground does not offer the chance to acquire much, but I treasure the small gifts the children of Romulan dissidents bring me. I know that when the times come for me to leave I most likely will not be able to take these things with me, but here again, their friendships are the gifts I will treasure and carry away.
Recently I was given a gift that, forgive me Jim, is almost important to me the treasured memories of our life together. Captain Picard arrived, searching for me and bearing the news that Sarek had succumbed to the effects of Bendii Syndrome. At the end of Picard's undercover mission, he offered me the chance to share a meld, to briefly feel the essence of my father that lived in his mind after they had shared a prolonged meld during one of my father's last diplomatic mission. My father and I had never taken the opportunity to share our minds. The gift Picard offered was one I never thought I would receive and it made it all the more precious.

| Prompt: #338- Tell us the story behind your name (or nickname). Name: Spock Fandom: Star Trek Words: 287
Most non-Vulcan's including my own mother are unable to pronounce my entire given name. Terran Standard has no equivalent characters to properly aid in the pronunciation. S'chn T'gai is the closest approximation I can provide for what is termed a surname. To use another Terran term, my 'first' name is simpler for Terrans and many others to pronounce. /spŏk/ being its standard Terran pronunciation. Spock, being the transliteration from Vulcan text.
The name is not unique. I am not the first to be thusly named, nor am I likely the only Vulcan currently existing with that name. My mother had agreed before my birth that it would be fitting for me to have a Vulcan name since that is where I would be born and raised. My father suggested the name of 'Spock', who was a person of note during the early years of the construction of our civilization based on Surakian Principles.
That is the story behind my name. I do not have a nickname unless one accepts Doctor McCoy's calling me a 'green-blooded, pointy-eared hobgoblin', a nickname. I do not understand the reasoning for such as this term is ten syllables and twenty-seven letters longer than my name. From what information I have gathered on the practice and custom of humans in inferring a nickname upon another, the chosen 'nickname', while reflecting a skill, an appearance or perhaps a significant event in that person's life, it is usually shorter than the person's given name. While my blood is green and my ears are somewhat pointed, this is basic Vulcan biology and I am not a superstitious fear inducing goblin. I do not accept this nickname, but arguing with Doctor McCoy is a futile exercise.

| Cool
I could not mistake the look in Dr. McCoy's eyes as he mentioned that I would find the planet's surface 'cool'. A quick glance at the gear set aside for the landing party showed cold weather gear. The two security officers were quickly donning their gear, the Captain was ready and McCoy was pulling his clothes on while watching me with a smile.
"Perhaps you would like an extra set of gear, Mr. Spock?" The Captain was looking at me, a grin on his face, but I saw the concern as well.
"These will be adequate Captain," I replied, pulling on the gear and making my way to the transporter pad.
"It is okay Mr. Spock, I won't let that green liquid you call blood turn into little ice crystals."
I saw the Captain give McCoy a pointed glance, but McCoy was still looking at me when I heard the whir of the transporter.
The cold blast nearly knocked me over and despite the warm hat that was pulled tightly down over my ears, I felt the tips of them chill. I did not resist the urge to burrow into the face guard held by the jacket collar. To seek heat, for survival, to prevent frostbite was logical. It was then I over heard McCoy tell Kirk he should send me back to the ship, that I was not built for this climate.
"I appreciate your concern, Dr. McCoy, but it is not necessary."
I went to work gathering the required readings needed, but frequently had to work around McCoy who followed me around like a shadow. I took the extra hat he offered from a pocket of his parka with a quiet nod of thanks. It would not do much to keep out the cold wind, but I oddly felt my ears warm up more than they should have.

| Title: Understanding Author: cmdr_spock Pairing: Spock/Kirk Rating: pg Summary: Kirk's serial cheating weighs on Spock. Set sometime after 'Journey to Babel', TOS era. Done for 20_est_relships . It wasn't easy to watch Kirk basically sleep his way around the universe. It bothered him even before they became a couple and more so after. He let him though. Let him hop from one female's bed to another all, as Jim would put it, for diplomacy's sake. He didn't think it had anything to do with diplomacy. His father was an ambassador and even Sarek raised an eyebrow at Jim's purported antics when rumours would cross his path. He couldn't see his father having sex with the opposing side just to secure a treaty. He still gave Jim his freedom, although Jim would return to him after a night or two with a girl, guilt obviously weighing him down, his golden eyes not quite daring to meet Spock's. He first thought that perhaps this guilt would bring Jim into line, but it was only a few occasions of him slipping into his first officers bed, freshly showered but Spock's more finely tuned sense of smell, still smelling another on what should be his and his alone and he knew that guilt wouldn't be enough. It hurt deeply, although it was something he would never admit. He simply refused to discuss it and would prevent Jim from bringing it up as well, even if it was couched in an apology for what he had done. It was the one selfish act he would allow himself because he knew it frustrated Jim not to come clean, to apologize. If he was going to hurt, to ache this bad, he wanted Jim to feel it too. Not logical, not the way to handle things, his Vulcan half told him, but his Vulcan half didn't offer any suggestions on how to deal with a human mate. He could have asked his father, but he didn't care to bring this relationship to his father's attention. He had disappointed him enough and they were finally speaking to one another again after eighteen years of stony silence. He could ask his mother, but he didn't want to risk her accidentally saying something to his father. So, he kept quiet. Occasionally he would let the anger he felt come out when they were sparring and Jim would barely be able to walk away from the exercise mat. He would ask Spock to spar again though. Maybe he knew and accepted this form of punishment for what he did. Spock would never ask although the question of why Jim kept straying especially when his guilt was so obviously overwhelming and inescapable, never left his mind completely. He learned to satisfy himself with depth of Jim's guilt and the bruises the man would sport after a sparring session and his facade of not caring. | |

| "Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent instantly recognizes genius."- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle The first few times he accepted his new Captain’s invite to a friendly game of chess, Spock wasn’t impressed. Kirk’s moves followed no logic he was familiar with. His moves were chaotic and Spock won easily. So easily in fact, he almost considered turning down the requests from his Captain after a handful of games. What was the point? There was no logic in playing someone who did not seem to learn from the prior games, who appeared to be nonchalant about his loses even. There was something different about this brash young man however that peaked Spock’s interest although he would never admit it and he found himself accepting yet another match one evening after an uneventful duty shift. His guard was up as he walked to Kirk’s quarters. All prior games had taken place in the officer’s lounge with other crew members witness to them. They had always gathered a crowd too. His estimation was that 98 percent of the onlookers were rooting for their new golden haired Captain, but he hadn’t minded. He found himself hoping that the man would have offered more of a challenge than he had as of yet done. Beggars couldn’t be choosers, however, one of his mother’s idioms that had puzzled him as a youth. After thoroughly trouncing even the best chess players on board, many refused to play him. “Evening, Mr. Spock. On time I see.” Kirk said, looking up with a slight grin from the table in his ready room where he was setting up the 3-D chess board. He held out his hands, clenched in fists. “Choose.” “Of course Captain.” He said. Of course he was on time. Why wouldn’t he be? Humans confused him. Especially this one and if he would admit it, it rankled him beyond comprehension. He nodded sharply towards Kirk’s right fist, that when opened, revealed the white knight. He expected as much. In their fourteen previous matches, Kirk placed the white piece in his hand a total of 10 times. He took his seat and made an opening move. Unlike previous games, Kirk reached to make his move with no hesitation. Spock’s eyebrow raised as he appraised the move. It was executed rashly, but in consideration, it was one of Kirk’s smarter moves. The game progressed rapidly after this with Spock staring at the board a few minutes later as Kirk triumphantly proclaimed “Checkmate”. His eyebrow shot up, almost concealed by his even bangs as he regarded the board and then Kirk who had reclined in his chair with a smug yet playful grin. “Talent recognizes genius Mr. Spock. But I didn’t want to reveal my hand too quickly.” Spock thought for a moment and then nodded. Perhaps he had underestimated this particular human after all.
